Sway Bar Bushings
I'm looking for the anti sway bar bushings now. I just checked Kanter's site and didn't see anything listed for 49 Plymouth sway bar bushings, they do have some "universal" bushings.

My brother and I were looking at this the other day. On the bracket you can see where the spot weld is. We were thinking that we could drill this out to remove the bushing. Find a bushing that was as close as possible then weld the bracket back together. Another option would be to again drill out the weld but then run a bolt through the holes to re-assemble.
Seems like a universal part that we would just need to figure out the dimensions. Maybe?

I gathered info and took some measurements of the sway bar parts.
Sway bar diameter
.6875" = 11/16 = 17.462mm
Sway bar circumference = 2.16"
Outer bushing part number 1120742
Measured 1.25" square except arch
Inner bushing part number 1121494
Measured 1.5" square except arch

These look like they would work for the outer bushings.

I just heard back from the above company...
BINGO!
These are almost the same size as our outer sway bar bushings, just not as wide.
Now I'll see what I can find for the inner bushings.

Paul, are you still thinking that you will have to cut the housing open to reinsert the new bushing? If so .... how will you reweld it with the new bushing in place without melting it?
I do think that the option of drilling out the weld and replacing it with a grade 8 bolt might be the best option .... particularly if you only have one set of bushings to play with. Now, if you could get a substantial heat sink between the new weld and the bushing you might be able to do it.
Wishing you well on this one 'cause I'd like to do it too!

I'm thinking two different things here. If they welded it in place, I'll just do a little at a time if it looks like things are heating up too much. I would like to try fitting the bushing into the bracket and sliding it onto the bar too. If the bushings I find to try don't cost too much I'll get some backups.

The outer sway bar bushings arrived and I had the chance to compare them. In the picture below the original bushing is on the left and the replacement bushing is on the right.

- The replacement bushings fit the lower control arm and the "bump" on the top of the bushing fits right into the sway bar clamp.

- They aren't as wide as the originals and they have a slit on one side. I'd guess that the original has distorted with age and it was probably a bit taller. The white stuff on the replacements is a waxy coating.

Johnny_S wrote:Paul, describe the angle/perspective we are seeing in that closeup. My "spatial" perception is weak .... never could fold those "boxes" right! Is that where you opened the clamp? .... seems obvious that it should be but it doesn't look damaged at all ... whatch u do to make it so clean?
I edited a little bit above, hope that helps. The closeup above your post is of the lower control arm on the drivers side. The new outer sway bar bushing is in place. I'll get more photos of what's going on today.
I have been putting the old rubber parts in a 50/50 water/degreaser solution using POR-15's Marine clean.
