Possible?

Post by Root Beer Stand » Sun Aug 2nd, 2009 7:22

Is it possible for the fuel pump to allow crankcase oil to get in the fuel without allowing fuel to get in the crankcase?
Know it sounds strange..........

Was tring to find an oil leak around the fuel pump a couple days ago.
It appears to be coming out of the fuel pump case somewhere. Very little oil loss at idle but a pain dripping on a concrete drive after a ride.

After 1/2 hr of looking while idling I notice a hint of blue smoke out the pipe. Revved the ole girl up a little and blue smoke shot out of the tail pipe pretty bad.....

After a couple revs it slowed down some but didn't stop.

I checked the oil for a gas smell. No gas smell I noticed but decided to change it anyway yesterday.

Pulled the Oil fill cap/vent and revved again a few times. Little smoke out the vent but still some out the exhaust. Cleaned the vent ans blew it out while it was off.

We drove her about 100 miles yesterday but most was at night and didn't notice any blue smoke to speak of when we had light to see.

I have a theory that the fuel pump may have allowed oil in the fuel somehow..........Possible?

Yes, it is possible. If the diaphragm in the fuel pump has a leak, oil from the crankcase will get into the fuel. If you have a dual action pump (vacuum and fuel) either of these diaphragms could have a slight leak.

A suggestion would be to rebuild the fuel pump.

These folks can supply all the parts you need, or you can send in your pump for a rebuild.
They also have new fuel pumps.

Thanks for the compliments. It's been a fun project.
